"In 2000, a film was released that changed the game of the horror genre, and it was called "Final Destination". It starred Devon Sawa as Alex Browning, a boy who boards a plane with his class and teachers bound for their field trip to Paris. However, upon sitting down, he has premonitions (or "visions of the future") in which the plane explodes following take-off. He scoffs at first, but when the actions made by people repeat what he saw in his vision, he panics and, along with a handful of friends, escapes the plane. After entering the airport from the plane, they watch in horror as some of their fellow students and teachers explode in the plane after takeoff. Angry that the students evaded him, Death himself begins stalking the students and kills them off in obscure ways one by one..."
It was a big film. Everyone I remember, was talking about it like it was some sort of cult phenomenon (when in reality, it was). Final Destination went on to gross three times its original budget and was a success around the world. No one suspected anything like this ever again...
That is, until 2003, when Final Destination 2 came out. Everyone was expecting Death to do something cool in this one. Everyone was desperately awaiting the next big entry in the series that would outdo the original in any way...Unfortunately, that isn't what we got. Final Destination 2 was basically Final Destination with different actors and situations. It wasn't anything special, just someone having a premonition, realizing the situation is dire, and they escape and watch the catastrophe unfold. Surprisingly though, not everyone liked this one despite it was the same formula. Of course, since Final Destination 2 was pretty mediocre, we didn't expect another one...
Ugh, until 2006 when Final Destination 3 was released. Again, same ol' same ol'. Nothing out of the ordinary, of course, except it was different actors with different situations. But again, no one cared. Just because it was the same formula, Final Destination 3 was even more well recieved than Final Destination 2. Of course, this made a trilogy of films, and no one expected them to break this achievement.
Goddamn it, until 2009 when The Final Destination (aka Final Destination 4) came out. You know, for a series called "The Final Destination", there sure are a lot of them. I mean, it would've been less laughable to call the first movie "First Destination", and then the second "The Second Destination", and make them all the way up to the last one, which would then be called "The Final Destination". Again, same shit. Just people seeing visions, dodging Death, and watching catastrophe's, then being picked off one by one. You get the feeling Hollywood know's we're suckers? I mean, here they are with four films that are same principle, same formula, same setting pretty much, but the only thing keeping them going is just different characters and different scenarios. But that's more than enough for this series of films. Unlike Saw, where the movies just kept going on and on and won't ever stop, Final Destination is actually more looked forward to than a new Saw movie.
With Final Destination 5 on its way (and approaching quickly), it begs the question of when the series might end. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's gonna be soon, but it might be withing ten years at least (haha). Anyway, if they've hit 5, they might as well do Final Destination 6 and make an even two trilogies of films. Besides, they could get creative with it, like Final Destination 666 or The Sixth Destination, I don't know. But anyway, here's the best of luck to Final Destination 5 in the theatrical run...
